ABC has assembled a group of cardiology experts to develop and disseminate the Let’s
Beat HCM!
educational curriculum.
The “Super Trainers” developed the training materials (see the Curriculum page). materials (see Curriculum page). The “State Leaders” are expert health care providers in
Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Texas, available to present in person and virtually
for hospital systems, medical schools, medical practices and more.

Super Trainers

Kevin M. Alexander

MD, FACC, FHFSA

Stanford University School Of Medicine

Dr. Alexander is an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist and a member of the Stanford Amyloid Center. He completed internal medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He then completed an advanced heart failure fellowship at Stanford Hospital.

Dr. Alexander’s clinical and research interests include cardiac amyloidosis, heart failure, and heart transplantation. His primary interest lies in cardiac amyloidosis, in particular unraveling the molecular determinants of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy to improve diagnosis and treatment. He has co-authored many publications on cardiac amyloidosis and has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health and American Heart Association.

Melissa Burroughs

MD, MS

Wellstar Health System

Dr. Burroughs is a noninvasive cardiologist at Wellstar Health System with a clinical emphasis on heart failure and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. She also has expertise in global health and health inequality. She serves on the board of directors of the Association of Black Cardiologists. Dr. Burroughs has conducted clinical research in theUnited States, Puerto Rico, Peru, and Brazil and has co-authored 23 scientific publications. She is an associate editor at the American Heart Journal.She currently serves on the steering committee for three ongoing clinical trials.

Dr. Burroughs has a passion for mentorship. She has mentored college students, medical students, medical residents and cardiology fellows in clinical research and clinical medicine.She also is committed to promoting innovation in health care.

Dr. Burroughs was born in St.Louis, MO and raised in Atlanta, GA. She graduated summa cum laude with aBachelor of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology from Emory University.She graduated cum laude from Harvard Medical School. She trained in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and completed cardiovascular medicine training at Duke University where she also received aMaster of Science in Global Health.

Anekwe E. Onwuanyi

MD, FACC, FAHA, FACP, FHFSA

Morehouse School Of Medicine

Dr. Anekwe E. Onwuanyi is Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology at Morehouse School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Heart Failure Program at Grady Memorial Hospital. Board-certified in cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, Dr. Onwuanyi has led numerous NIH- and AHA-funded studies focused on heart failure, hypertension, and health disparities. He is Co-Principal Investigator and Training Director of the AHA-funded TOTAL project, part of the DIVERSE network advancing equity in clinical research. Under his leadership, Grady’s heart failure program has achieved national recognition.

Dr. Onwuanyi is Immediate Past President of the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Heart Failure Society of America. A Fellow of multiple leading professional societies, he mentors the next generation of clinician-scientists and has pioneered workforce diversity through the Morehouse cardiovascular fellowship. Dr. Onwuanyi received his medical degree with honors from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.

Florida

Adedapo A. Iluyomade

MD, FACC

Baptist Health Heart And Vascular Care

Dr. Adedapo Iluyomade is a preventive cardiologist at Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, part of Baptist Health, with clinical expertise in preventive cardiology, clinical lipidology, and cardiovascular imaging. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he later served as a noninvasive cardiologist. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Iluyomade serves on the Board of the Florida Chapter and holds an MBA from Plymouth State University. His work has been recognized by the Association of Black Cardiologists with a $50,000 COVID Innovations Grant. While at the University of Miami, he developed an algorithm to detect early heart disease in patients with diabetes.

Dr. Iluyomade is fluent in English and Yoruba and conversational in Spanish. He is dedicated to shared decision-making and empowering patients through education and engagement. Outside of medicine, he enjoys travel, CrossFit, basketball, fine arts, and graphic design.

Peter D. Taylor

MD, MBA, FACC

The Cardiovascular Center Of Florida

Dr. Peter York Donovan Taylor is a board-certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist with over 25 years of clinical experience. He received his medical degree from Temple University and completed his internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Virginia, followed by cardiology and electrophysiology fellowships at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Taylor is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Florida State University. He has served on multiple hospital committees and held leadership roles.

Dr. Taylor is very interested in addressing the disparities in health care regarding minorities. He has been active in the Orlando community and has participated in programs addressing this disparity. He practices electrophysiology, advanced heart failure, and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Taylor has an executive MBA from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management.

Georgia

Ugochukwu Egolum

MD

Georgia Heart Institute

Dr. Ugochukwu Egolum is a heart failure cardiologist at Georgia Heart Institute, where he serves as Program Director for both the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Clinical Program and the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Board-certified in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease, and Internal Medicine, Dr. Egolum trained at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he completed fellowships in General Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure and served as Chief Fellow. He earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine, graduating in the top 10% of his class and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Egolum has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and presents nationally and internationally. His research focuses on heart failure, cardiac amyloidosis, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiac sarcoidosis. He is a member of several leading professional societies and serves as a national advisor and principal investigator on major clinical trials.

Massachusetts

Ethan J. Rowin

MD, MBA

University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School

Dr. Ethan J. Rowin is a cardiologist in Burlington, Massachusetts and is affiliated with Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and has been in practice between for more than 10 years. Dr. Rowin has expertise in treating cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, among other conditions.

Texas

Travis Batts

MD, FACC

South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants

Dr. Travis Batts is a board-certified cardiologist with over two decades of experience in cardiovascular prevention, sports cardiology, and plant-based nutrition. A former NCAA Division I track athlete, Dr. Batts earned his biochemistry degree from the University of Kansas and his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completing his training in San Antonio, Texas. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served as Medical Director at one of the military’s largest cardiology clinics and continues to serve as Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University. Dr. Batts is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and an active contributor to the Association of Black Cardiologists.

He is the producer and host of the internationally distributed podcast, "About That L.I.F.E." where he focuses on fitness, nutrition and health literacy.  He currently manages a host of community-based adult and youth programs such as the H.O.L.I. program, which promotes lifestyle education to faith-based communities,  Total Body Health, STEM in a Box, and most notably, Everyone Can Assist (E.C.A.), which is focused on youth heart health and CPR awareness for sports teams.

Olasimbo M. Chiadika

Dr. Simbo Chiadika is a Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at The University of Texas HealthScience Center (UTHealth) McGovern Medical School. She received her medical degree and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia UniversityCollege of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. Dr. Chiadika completed fellowships in Cardiology at St. Luke’s Roosevelt and in Nuclear Cardiology atNew York Presbyterian Hospital, both in New York City. Dr. Chiadika is certified by the American Board of Nuclear Cardiology, the American Board ofInternal Medicine, and the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiology.She has advanced Level 3 training in Echocardiogram and is a Fellow of theAmerican College of Cardiology.

Dr. Chiadika is a dedicated physician leader whose work spans clinical excellence, community engagement and health equity. She serves on the Cardiovascular Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and leads as President of the Houston Medical Forum. In her role as Quality Officer of Cardiology, she supports efforts to improve care delivery while also addressing systemic disparities through education and outreach. Her research focuses on preventive cardiology and the cardiac impact of sickle cell disease.
